Most people put up with the occasional bad night’s sleep without any ill effects, but if poor sleep goes on for several weeks, you may start to worry about whether it is having an adverse effect on your health and well being. First and foremost, keep your worries and problems out of your bedroom. Do make the hours before going to bed as relaxing as possible to keep your mind off the day’s problems and worries. Avoid drinking and smoking heavily and stay away from tea and coffee before hitting the pillow. Also, refrain from having heavy meals just before going to bed. Do not attempt any serious work like extensive debates or arguments before sleeping. You will tend to carry them with you while sleeping. Avoid late night exercises as they can keep you awake. Avoid staring at the clock while going to sleep. In case you do not get sleep, get up and do some light reading so that you can go to sleep again.
Sometimes, a harmless snack like an oatmeal biscuit may enable you to go to sleep. Your night meals should be light and yet nourishing to aid your sleeping pattern. Once you have tried all the above mentioned measures, there is no reason why you should not be able to get a good night’s sleep.
